TIDBITS of facts…..
In hardwood forests, the best way to start new growth is by management. This management includes cutting the appropriate trees to open up the canopy for new growth. If trees are not managed and just left to grow, they are susceptible to insect damage and disease. This occurred in Alaska when harvesting was stopped during the Clinton era. Hillsides were killed off by beetle damage leaving those hills barren and erosion occurred. Fires in the west occur when management is not done. Note the green undergrowth in the photo above which is a good sign. When there is little “greenery”, the brown fuel creates a perfect environment for fire.
Products of trees include: toilet paper, lumber, toothpaste, railroad ties, twinkies, soap, cabinets, firewood, paper, oils, boxes… Just look around. And then we can look at the value of a healthy tree: shade, oxygen producer, watershed control, climbing, air cleaner, wildlife….
